Music History

The Legendary Blues Highway

Highway 61 runs right through Helena, connecting Memphis to New Orleans along the most storied musical route in America. This is where the Delta blues was born, where legends like Robert Johnson, Sonny Boy Williamson, and B.B. King honed their craft.

Helena itself played a crucial role in blues history. The King Biscuit Time radio show, broadcast from Helena starting in 1941, was the first daily radio program devoted entirely to blues music—and it's still on the air today.

Each October, the King Biscuit Blues Festival draws tens of thousands of music lovers to our small town. But any time of year, the spirit of the blues is alive in Helena.
