Historical Note
James C. Tappan moved to Helena in 1848 to practice law and later served as a circuit judge. He became a Confederate brigadier general in 1862. After the war he served as Speaker of the Arkansas House and twice declined to run for governor. He is buried in Helena's Maple Hill Cemetery.
